SUMMER 2010 CAMP INFORMATION!

Camp Haverim Summer Camp 2010
Making Friends For Life

Camp Haverim, Santa Barbara's homegrown Jewish day-camp, which is accredited by the American Camp Association, is back for its 5th season! Camp Haverim is led by its experienced director, Itzik Ben Sasson. Itzik works with rabbis, educators and parents from the greater Santa Barbara Jewish community to offer your child a rich and rewarding camp experience. Camp Haverim fosters friendships and engages campers in fun, interesting and exciting activities - all in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.

Mission

Camp Haverim's mission is to provide a high-quality Jewish summer camp experience that fosters the children's social, moral, cultural, physical and emotional education and development. Camp Haverim is a supportive, caring community camp with an upbeat Jewish flavor and is committed to serving families regardless of their background or ability to pay.

Staff

Camp Haverim knows that the success or failure of any camp rests squarely on the shoulders of its staff, counselors and supervisors, so we go to great lengths to get the very best. Itzik Ben Sasson, who has a broad range of experience and expertise directing an array of programs providing social and educational opportunities for our community and our children, will once more be the Camp Director. Our senior counselors are predominantly college students. Our counselors in training and junior counselors are primarily local high school students with special skills and training. Many of our staff are themselves former campers. They care about our campers, and it shows.

Camp Schedule: There will be two (2) two-week sessions:

Session I: July 19th - July 30th
Session II: August 2nd - August 13th

The camp day starts promptly at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00 pm. Bus transportation is available (see below).

Age of Campers

Camp Haverim, which is non-denominational and inclusive, offers a rich and rewarding summer day camp experience for campers age 5 to 12, in grades K-6. Campers are grouped by age for most activities, but share other experiences as a group. Our program is designed to offer campers increasingly challenging age-appropriate activities as they grow older and more mature.

Our Habonim (which means the Builders) program is a separate program that offers more challenging age-appropriate activities to campers in grades 7 and 8. Our Habonim will experience exciting sports activities, such as surfing, scuba diving and tennis, and receive leadership training to prepare them to return in subsequent years as CITs.

As in the past, high school students will be able to participate as junior counselors.

Activities

Camp Haverim offers many activities designed to meet our children's diverse interests and encourage learning and growth. Among those activities are Art, Music, Journalism, Drama, Maccabia Games, Swimming and a full array of sports, including play time in the pool. An alternative water activity, such as a slip-n-slide, will be available to children who do not wish to swim in the pool.

Tuition

The cost of each camp session is $490 for grades K-6 (The cost for one week only is $260). We offer children attending all four weeks a $80 discount, reducing the total cost to $900, and a second child/sibling discount of $50 per session. The tuition includes all camp field trips, a camp T-shirt and two snacks per day. There is an additional fee of $150 per two-week session for our 7th and 8th grade Habonim campers, to cover the cost of special activities (like surfing and scuba diving). The full tuition for each session must be paid before the first day of that session.

Early Bird Special!: $25 discount per session if enrolled by April 30 and paid in full by June 30.

Scholarships are available for all age groups. Camp Haverim is committed to welcoming all Jewish children regardless of their family's ability to pay. Please contact our Camp Director, Itzik Ben Sasson, at 895-6593 for information about scholarships.

Transportation

Camp Haverim offers bus transportation to and from camp with convenient pick-up points at San Marcos High School in Goleta and Pershing Park (at the corner of Castillo and Montecito streets) downtown. The bus, which costs $60 per camper per two-week session, leaves Goleta promptly at 8:15 am and leaves downtown promptly at 8:40 am. At the end of our camp day, the bus returns to the downtown location at 3:30 pm and to the Goleta location at 3:45 pm. Bus service is available only to those who pay for it in advance.

Camp Location

By popular demand, Camp Haverim will once again be held at the spectacular, scenic and serene campus of Cate School! The campus is located on a 150-acre mesa between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most beautiful locations in Santa Barbara County. Cate School's grounds feature an athletic field, tennis courts, swimming pool, art studio and other recreational and program facilities.

Judaism at Camp

Jewish culture and values form a thread that is woven into every aspect of camp life, but unlike more formal learning settings, the emphasis here is on fun. Our campers enjoy being Jewish and expressing their Judaism, which leads to good feelings and a stronger Jewish identity. Our program features games and songs that celebrate Judaism and special events like Israel Day, which help build Jewish pride. Creative Shabbat services, which campers help plan and lead, highlight the warmth and beauty that makes Shabbat so special and joyous.
